New member of Linux Foundation

ProFUSION is proud to announce that it has joined the Linux Foundation as a Silver Member. We’ve always supported the work the Linux Foundation does, and we now hope to be able to do even more as partners in order to further improve the state of the Linux ecosystem.

One of the main working groups where ProFUSION has contributed and will continue both with development and support is Tizen, the new software platform targeting mobile devices.

ProFUSION was present at the Freescale Technology Forum 2011 that happened in San Antonio, Texas. As usual, it was a great event with excellent sessions and an amazing technology lab.

At the technology lab Freescale presented its i.MX25 processor running on a refrigerator done by Electrolux in partnership with ProFUSION. Our CEO Ulisses Furquim was then interviewed by Freescale, the video can be watched at youtube.

Electrolux is pushing a revolution to the world of modern kitchens with the launch of its new Infinity I-Kitchen . Following the bold design found in the Infinity series, this new refrigerator brings high-end technology to your kitchen. It features a high-resolution touch panel with a clean user interface designed with simplicity and intuitiveness in mind. From annotating a phone number to controlling its internal temperature, all the functionalities are just a finger touch away from you. This product has been developed in a joint effort between the Brazilian subsidiary of Electrolux and ProFUSION embedded systems.

Besides improving the services already provided, the new product leverages the usage of high technology to simplify user interaction. It’s possible to visualize basic information such as current time and external temperature as well as using several applications already built-in: notes, calendar, contacts, photos, tips and recipes. The Notes application avoids spreading the famous Post-it notes throughout the refrigerator all the while taking its functionality to a new level, marking messages as unread, reminding you of birthdays and appointments. Through Photos it’s possible to use your refrigerator as a digital photo frame and Recipes brings more than 600 recipes published by a famous Brazilian magazine.

These innovations were possible thanks to the use of opensource softwares like GNU/Linux and the EFL libraries. By uniting the strengths of Electrolux and ProFUSION, the platform was optimized to extract the most from the Freescale i.MX25 processor. All the modifications done in these opensource projects were sent to their respective communities and will also be available at Electrolux’s website.

Seguindo a linha de design arrojado da série Infinity, este novo refrigerador incorpora tecnologia de forma nunca antes explorada no mercado brasileiro: um painel interativo de alta resolução e sensível ao toque oferece receitas, anota recados e controla o aparelho com simplicidade. O produto foi planejado e desenvolvido em conjunto com a também brasileira ProFUSION Embedded Systems.

Além de melhorar os serviços já oferecidos, o novo produto utiliza a tecnologia para facilitar a vida do usuário. Desde o básico como o relógio e a temperatura externa, até aplicativos como recados, calendário, contatos, fotos, dicas e receitas. O aplicativo Recados elimina a necessidade dos famosos papéis presos com ímãs de geladeira e agrega melhorias como aviso de recados não lidos, alerta para compromissos e aniversários; o Fotos permite utilizar seu refrigerador como um porta retratos digital; já o Receitas, uma das principais novidades do produto, oferece em parceria com uma famosa revista feminina mais de 600 receitas ilustradas.

Essas inovações são possíveis graças às tecnologias baseadas em software livre como GNU/Linux e as bibliotecas EFL que foram utilizadas. A plataforma desenvolvida no Brasil pela ProFUSION para a Electrolux foi otimizada com a experiência dos nossos desenvolvedores para extrair o máximo de desempenho da plataforma Freescale i.MX25. Todas as modificações realizadas nos projetos software livre utilizados já foram integradas às respectivas comunidades, e estarão também disponíveis para download no site da Electrolux.

profusion talks and events

October and November are being busy months regarding public talks and events that ProFUSION participated. Not just lots of them, but broad scope covering business, free software philosophy and the usual technical talks.

Covering philosophy and a bit of business were talks by Gustavo and Eduardo. Gustavo’s How to employ free software in your venture at UNICAMP event by CONPEC covered different use cases of free software in startups or more established business, from just being users of free software, contributing code up to creating and releasing your own projects. Eduardo de Barros Lima presented at ENACOMP “Linux and Free Software market opportunities”.

Given its strong tech background, couple of ProFUSION employees did presentations covering WebKit, BlueZ and event oriented programming.

At UNIFEG’s COMPUFEG event Gustavo explained the “event oriented programming” concept that guides most of GUI applications, how to create your own main loop given the basic principles. Rafael Antognolli explained what is WebKit, how the project is structured and its community, explaining how ProFUSION (re)created, contributed and maintains WebKit-EFL port upstream.

Gustavo Padovan just became the Linux Kernel Bluetooth Maintainer in time to speak about the BlueZ project and the current status and planned changes to Linux Bluetooth stack at Embedded Linux Conference-Europe and then Linux Plumbers Conference.

As regular attendee ProFUSION participated into Brazilian Government’s “14BIS” that explained overall goals and incentives to make our Football World Cup (2014) and Olympic Games (2016) rock with excellent combination of technology to fulfill social and security requirements while staying environment friendly.
